From the first flap of the book Bangla Academy Bangla Pronunciation Dictionary:

It is generally assumed that there is no conflict between the written form of Bangla words and their pronunciation. But those who are closely involved with the profession of pronunciation know that, like many other languages of the world, Bangla too has its desired and standard pronunciations which need to be conveyed to readers. With this aim, in 1990 Bangla Academy published the Bangla Academy Bangla Pronunciation Dictionary. Within a very short time, it managed to create wide response among readers.

The relevant work of the present revised and expanded edition was personally undertaken by Naren Biswas. His extraordinary command over Bangla phonetics is widely acknowledged. Based on his long experience, he determined the pronunciation of words in this book. Considering the difficulties of ordinary users, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) has not been used; instead, the universally accepted Bangla script for pronunciation has been adopted.

Often, depending on meaning, a word may have two different pronunciations. Taking this into account, the present edition indicates the primary meaning of such words. The spelling of the entries has followed the standard orthography of Bangla Academy.
