The Sage of the Ummah, Hazrat Ashraf Ali Thanvi was a renowned scholar who imparted teachings of self-purification and Tasawwuf Thousands of people, both in the Indian subcontinent and beyond. He is also famous for his organization ‘Dawat-ul-Haq,’ which played a significant role in promoting the knowledge of Sunnah among Muslims in the subcontinent. Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi was born on August 19, 1863 (Rabiu Sani 5, 1280 Hijri) in Thanabhavan, Uttar Pradesh, India. His educational journey began in childhood when he memorized the entire Quran under Hafiz Hussain Ali (ra). He received basic education in Arabic and Persian from Hazrat Maulana Fateh Muhammad Thanvi (ra) in his own village. In 1295 Hijri, he enrolled in Darul Uloom Deoband to pursue higher Islamic knowledge. He studied there for five years, focusing on Hadith, Tafsir, Arabic literature, Islamic philosophy, logic, Islamic law, and history. After completing his education in Deoband, he went to Makkah Mukarramah to learn Qira'at and Tajweed from Muhammad Abdullah Muhajir Makki. He began his career as a teacher at a madrasa in Kanpur with a salary of just 25 rupees. Later, he held the position of principal at Jamia-ul-Uloom Madrasa in Topkapur, Kanpur, and taught there for 14 years. Subsequently, on the advice of his teacher Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki (ra), he settled in the Khanqah Imdadiya in Thanabhavan, where he remained until the end of his life. Throughout his life, the total number of books authored by Ashraf Ali Thanvi exceeds twelve and a half thousand, including the widely read Fiqah book 'Beheshti Zewar' among Muslims of the subcontinent. Additionally, his Urdu translation of the Quran, ‘Bayaan-ul-Quran’ (exegesis of the Quran), is renowned for its language and style of interpretation. Hakim-ul-Ummat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (ra) has left the rights to all his works open for the welfare of the community. He passed away on July 19, 1943 (16 Rajab, 1362 Hijri) in his birthplace, Thanabhavan.
