His full name was Muhyuddin Abu Zakariya Yahya ibn Shaykh Abu Yahya Murri ibn Hasan ibn Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Jum'ah ibn Hizam Al-Hizami An-Nawawi. "Muhyuddin" was his honorary title, and "Abu Zakariya" was his kunya or nickname. His immense reputation during his lifetime and his unmatched status in knowledge and piety earned him the titles "Muhyuddin" (Reviver of the Faith) and, by some accounts, "Muhyus Sunnah" (Reviver of the Sunnah). He was born in Muharram of the year 631 AH in a village called Nawa, near Damascus. His association with his birthplace led to the attribution of "An-Nawawi" to his name. It is well-established that Allah prepares His chosen servants for great services to the religion and humanity from an early age. Imam Nawawi (Rahimahullah) was no exception to this. Even in his childhood, he stood out among other children. Despite being born into a humble, illiterate family in a remote village, his entire focus was on acquiring knowledge. His father, a shopkeeper, wanted him to assist in the business. However, Imam Nawawi sought permission from his father to pursue knowledge and moved to Damascus, enrolling in the Ar-Rawahiyyah institution and remaining in the company of scholars. It was there that he excelled in all branches of Islamic knowledge. Imam Adh-Dhahabi (Rahimahullah) remarked, "He (Nawawi) would spend most of his days and nights in the pursuit of knowledge. His dedication and intellect made him a model of inspiration." He was known to eat only once a day and even recited lessons while walking. At the age of 21, in 651 AH, he accompanied his father on Hajj. During this journey, he met the leading scholars of Makkah and Madinah, further enhancing his expertise in Hadith sciences. Imam Nawawi passed away on the 24th of Rajab in 676 AH, at the age of 45 or 46. Tajuddin As-Subki (Rahimahullah) stated, "His death plunged Damascus and surrounding cities into grief." He was buried in his birthplace, Nawa.
